Alice In Wonderland Cuba Style
Alice in Wonderland: The Mad Hatter’s Tea Party (commission), by Raul Speek

The exhibition about Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland at the V&A Museum in London has reminded Raul of a very special commission he created.

Alice in Wonderland: The Mad Hatter’s Tea Party is an oil on canvas painting commissioned by a customer who had a large collection of paintings featuring the famous story character.

He wanted Raul to produce a Cuban-style artwork featuring Alice, and left it up to Raul to pick the subject, so he chose ‘The Mad Hatter’s Tea Party’.

As magical realism is a theme that runs throughout Raul’s work, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland is a tale that has a lot in common with his art.

And the Alice: Curiouser and Curiouser event at the V&A shows the enduring appeal of Lewis Carroll’s 19th-century children’s book.

Folk art: Welsh cottages on wood

Raul has been busy creating folk art at our gallery in Solva.

Using wood rescued from old Welsh cottages and houses, he’s been painting small images of the properties that are fast disappearing from the local landscape. Many of the cottages are being bought and renovated.

You can pick up your own piece of history at Raul Speek Gallery in the Old Chapel, Solva, where Raul’s Welsh cottages on wood are available to buy.

Unusual seaside-themed art commission

Raul has completed an outdoor commission for a neighbour in Solva who wanted to improve the view from her dining room window.

She asked for a painting that was big enough to sit outside a window that looks out on a plain grey wall.

The woman chose a seaside theme, and Raul has heavily varnished the oil on wood to protect it from the weather.

Plus, Raul overcame his claustrophobia by squeezing through the 18in gap between the wall and the window to hang the artwork.

If you’d like to commission Raul for a painting, 3D work, mural, or other piece of art, get in touch on 01437 721907 or

Raul is pictured making a new letter box, built using recycled slate from a neighbour’s roof that is being replaced. It’s another example of Raul highlighting the importance of recycling to help reduce waste.

Beautiful handmade books

These three attractive books have been handmade by Raul’s wife, Heather Bennett.

The blue and white notebook is Coptic-stitched and is ideal for your journaling. It includes handmade sections and envelopes.

The red book is a sketchbook, which could also be used as a journal. It has a hard spine and is fastened with a button and woven leather thread. The book is made from heavy duty art paper and the hard cover has been batik-printed by Heather’s friend, Bobbie.

The third book is a concertina-style book. Most of Heather’s concertina-style books will contain images of different photographic works Heather has produced over the years, such as Pembrokeshire, Solva, Venetian masks, Cuba, mists, etc.

You’ll be able to pick up the gorgeous handmade books from next spring at Raul Speek Gallery in Solva.
