RAUL SPEEK LIMITED EDITION PRINTS

We’re often asked if we produce Limited Edition Prints of the works signed and numbered by Raul. Raul’s wife Heather is a talented photographer and printer, and is able to print images up to A2 size, which we mount and send out, usually within a week of receipt of orders.  It takes this time to get them mounted as many of Raul’s images are not on traditional size stretchers and so mounts have to be cut (locally) by a professional mount cutter in order to obtain the correct proportion and fit.

We use acid-free archive paper, supplied by PermaJet and photographic inks from Epson that are guaranteed to last 75 years. And because of the density of the paper and the quality of the inks, the prints have to be allowed to dry for 48 hours before sending out, hence the gap of four days.

There’s a small selection of these images here, with details by each of name, size available and price.   We are currently reviewing sizes of these (19 April 2021) as proportions do not work with standard A3 and A2 mounts.  Please contact us in the meantime if you want to check this out.  These come ready mounted but not framed because glass is a problem either in the post or by courier.

Postage is free in the UK but a charge is made for images going abroad – please ask for details.

We do supply one-off prints of originals to size required – please contact us for a quote. These come rolled and ready for mounting when framed.

  • Girasol

    £195.00
37 cm x 37 cm From an original oil on canvas painting by Raul Speek. In Cuba, the sunflower (girasol) represents joy and hope, and throughout Raul’s work he often comes back to presenting them differently. But while he paints, he always feels the warmth their shape and colour bring him.
  • Excavation

    £135.00£195.00
A3 and A2 From an original oil on canvas painting by Raul Speek. Digging deep into who he is as a person of colour, Raul sometimes feels as though he’s taking part in an excavation into the past, which, although not part of his life, is part of his race. It’s fashionable right now to talk about Black Lives Matter, but to Raul all humanity matters. His hope for the future is that we all learn to communicate and accept each other exactly how we are.
  • Welsh Portrait 1

    £135.00£195.00
A3 and A2 From an original oil on canvas painting by Raul Speek. This image is one of a series of three, and there are more inside Raul’s head that will come into being. They may seem to be in strong colours, which to many don’t reflect the tones of Wales, but Welsh women have strong personalities, and it’s the colour of those parts of each person that are reflected in the images.
  • Welsh Portrait 2

    £135.00£195.00
A3 and A2 From an original oil on canvas painting by Raul Speek. This image is one of a series of three, and there are more inside Raul’s head that will come into being. They may seem to be in strong colours, which to many don’t reflect the tones of Wales, but Welsh women have strong personalities, and it’s the colour of those parts of each person that are reflected in the images.
  • Welsh Portrait 3

    £135.00£195.00
A3 and A2 From an original oil on canvas painting by Raul Speek. This image is one of a series of three, and there are more inside Raul’s head that will come into being. They may seem to be in strong colours, which to many don’t reflect the tones of Wales, but Welsh women have strong personalities, and it’s the colour of those parts of each person that are reflected in the images.
  • House on the Hill

    £135.00£195.00
A3 and A2 From an original oil on canvas painting by Raul Speek. In Wales, many of the valleys are deep and quiet, and then suddenly there’s a house or a tree that strikes a chord in Raul’s imagination. It’s similar in Cuba. Raul was born in a deep valley, just like the one at Solva, which is maybe why he is so at home here. It’s a subject he returns to in different forms, again and again.
  • Abstract 1

    £135.00£195.00
A3 and A2 From an original mixed media on canvas painting by Raul Speek. Abstract 1 and Abstract 2 are separate expressions of the weather and the light as two times of the day: at dawn and at the turn of evening. They’re not sold as a pair, although they could easily belong together.
  • Abstract 2

    £135.00£195.00
A3 and A2 From an original mixed media on canvas painting by Raul Speek. Abstract 1 and Abstract 2 are separate expressions of the weather and the light as two times of the day: at dawn and at the turn of evening. They’re not sold as a pair, although they could easily belong together.
  • Welsh Lady at Tea

    £135.00£195.00
A3 and A2 From an original oil on canvas painting by Raul Speek. Raul is fascinated by old photographs of Welsh women in their national dress and feels they should be acknowledged as being important to their culture. The clothes, the colours, and the sentiment of the tea ceremony in Welsh homes may be of times gone by, but they are still important to remember.
  • Moonlit Beach

    £135.00£195.00
A3 and A2 From an original oil on canvas painting by Raul Speek. It’s night-time and the sounds are distant, leaving the natural movement of the water to sing its own song. The water reaches out to cover the sand, leaving some almost white in the moonlight. As Raul watches this happening, he sits and dreams of how life works in cycles and has its own rhythm that man cannot change.
  • The Provider

    £135.00£195.00
A3 and A2 From an original oil on canvas painting by Raul Speek. This is part of a series of images and is centred on the fact that in Raul’s home country women provide for the home and the family. Although, since the Cuban Revolution, equality has been part of everyday life, Raul acknowledges that women still are the centre of the home, often carrying home from the market the food for the family on their heads. So, these paintings aren’t just about the physical fact of carrying, they also represent the degree of responsibility women hold.
  • Welsh Village

    £135.00£195.00
A3 and A2 From an original oil on canvas painting by Raul Speek. Raul is in love with the stone-built villages of Wales and the way they nestle into the landscape. They sometimes represent centuries of security for those who have lived in them. Having led a bit of a nomadic life himself, Raul is fascinated by the idea of such long attachment to roots and culture.
  • 37 cm x 37 cm From an original oil and acrylic on wood by Raul Speek. Many people ask Raul why he often works in abstract, and what he says to them is his hands transmit through the brush the feelings he has about a place or time in his life. In Raul’s figurative work, it’s more about a different form of writing, whereas this image reaches into his subconscious for how the landscape feels emotionally. Sometimes it’s straight lines, but more often a blend of texture and colour that speaks from his heart.
  • 37 cm x 37 cm From an original oil on canvas painting by Raul Speek. Raul’s magical realism is a theme which runs throughout his work and is one which is central to the culture of South America in its art and literature. Redolent with this is Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s novel, One Hundred Years of Solitude.
  • 26 x 26 cm From an original oil on canvas by Raul Speek. Raul’s abstract work is an arena he has always explored. He was encouraged by artists like Mimmo Rotella, who he worked with at the Havana Biennale, and clients at the Rene Portocarrero Screen Printing Studio. Raul was a founder member of the studio and clients came from all over the world to use the print facility there.
  • El Silencio

    £195.00
A2 From an original oil on canvas with found work by Raul Speek. Raul’s Magical Realism is a theme which runs throughout his work and is one which is central to the culture of South America in its Art and Literature for example in Gabriel Garcia Marquez novel 100 Years of Solitude
  • 37cm x 37 cm (plus mount) From an original oil on canvas painting by Raul Speek. Raul has always been aware of the debt he owes to people like Che Guevara and Fidel Castro, for without them his life would have been very different. He owes them his education, and although his politics are not aligned with theirs, he has never sought to deny his roots. His homage to Che’s iconic image is his thank you.
  • Spirit of the Forest

    £110.00£135.00
A4 and A3. From an original watercolour by Raul Speek featuring the mythology and colours of Cuba
  • The Passion

    £195.00
37cm x 37cm (plus mount) From an original oil on canvas painting by Raul Speek. Raul’s religious iconography forms one of the major themes of his work. There's a frequent assumption that Castro would have banned religion in Cuba during the years of the revolution but he knew his people too well to do that. Raul was raised as a Christian and still has a strong faith.
  • Provider lll

    £135.00£195.00
A3 and A2 From an original oil on canvas with found work by Raul Speek. Raul’s magical realism is a theme that runs throughout his work and is central to the culture of South America. The Provider explores the role of women in the home and the burdens they carry to feed and maintain the family, often in times of poverty.

A4 and A3 From an original oil on canvas by Raul Speek. Raul has absorbed the mythology and colours of Wales over the time he has lived here. He is currently working on a series of these partially monochrome but textured images.
  • Red Sky at Night

    £135.00£195.00
A3 and A2 From an original oil on card by Raul Speek. This image with its scorching colours is a cross over between Magical Realism and Raul’s landscape work. It holds the colour of Cuba alongside the cottage and dramatic hillside of Wales.
